MSC: SS/OS Inverted Climb Textures

A digital inspiration guide for stylizing and texturizing same side and opposite side knee hook inversion climbs.

These climb texturing concepts are subtle movement pathways designed to help you begin to identify places to engagement and moments to relax in climbing. Inspiration for body movement, arm pathway, connection to spin — all leading to what can become natural expression in choreography.

This manual demonstrates techniques on aerial silks through over 25 voice-over video clips. A majority of the drills can be executed on corde-lisse as well as silks. Some drills are applicable to any aerial apparatus that you “knee hook” onto, but the manual is designed for vertical apparatus explorations.

The drills and practice this manual can generate for you will build your body awareness and movement quality for seamless integration of style/ “texture” into your classic climbs.

This Climb Texturizing manual is best for aerialists who are already able to safely invert to straddle without tagging the apparatus. Knowledge/ practice of Same Side Knee Hook is also recommended.

Inversions are used for some drills as well as in the practice choreography, however concepts can be applied to all movements in the air.

From these exercises and new connections between engagement gaze, intentionality and directionality I hope you feel inspired to add more texture to your own inversion climb practice - and these concepts go well beyond just these two classic climbs! Identifying the moments to exaggerate and accentuate is a muscle to be exercised - and one that is strengthened through understanding of technique and what is “necessary” to a skill - and through your connection to the apparatus.

DISCLAIMER: Aerial arts are a VERY dangerous practice. They require body awareness, control (ability to hold positions and move through pathways with respect for transitions), and strength built through good form habits learned in classes and lessons with a qualified coach. Learning from online resources can be a great avenue when also accompanied by hands-on coaching - there are many nuances to aerial wraps and positioning, engagement or control of the body that are difficult to understand the reasoning or importance behind. Always work safely over a mat and always try new things from the ground first! All exercises in this manual are executed at your own risk. Moody Street Circus LLC and all persons involved in the creation of this guide will not accept responsibility for injury to any degree as a result of practicing the drills in this manual. Always consult a professional rigger to make sure your apparatus is safe.

Skills are best ”unwrapped” with a coach at your side!
